sometimes i just really like a song.
EDIT 2024: For some reason these college blogs have been getting pushed through SEO, I did not expect more than two people in my class 2 years ago to ever read these. I have no authority and I am not a reviewer, music journalist, etc. This is documentation of my personal relationship to these songs.
Every week I’m going to do a deep dive into a song(or a couple, or an album) that I like but I don’t understand the meaning of, but would like to. My solemn promise is that the song will be either obscure, ridiculously long, or objectively bad. Maybe all three.
Songs embeded in the posts, so you can listen as you read.
Life Worth Missing – Car Seat Headrest
Someone once put this song in a playlist about me, so I’m gonna figure out what it means.
Late (Lioness) – Kid Freud
A quick spring break breakdown of my favorite garage-pop song.
British Bombs – Declan McKenna
A punchy indie pop song about British arms deals in the Middle East.
Beach Life-In-Death
A 13 minute, 3-act story about love, sex, heartbreak, fitting in, and coming out.
Monsters / Politics of Grooming
Taking another look at Slaughter Beach, Dog, and drawing some lines in an overarching story about growing up.
Sam & Diane / How Many Years – Brother Moses
I just love it when artists write stories between songs that I can snoop into. SPOILERS: Cheers?
Black Oak – Slaughter Beach, Dog
A song that took me a year to understand. TW: SA, Abuse, Murder
Mississipi Swells – Nana Grizol
That one written by a folk anarchist is, as it turns out, kind of political.
